Formation

In an appropriate monastic environment, young men can study, pray, and grow both in their monastic journey and as human beings.

Ongoing formation

Pope Francis emphasized the importance of ongoing formation. The years of our young brothers in Rome are precious and they should be used not only for their academic careers but also for their spiritual and human growth. To this end, we utilize the deaneries suggested in the Rule of Saint Benedict. Each resident is a member of a small deanery group, headed by an experienced priest who helps him navigate the new situation, spiritually, culturally and academically during his studies.

The abbot primate and the prior regularly deliver conferences, which are supplemented by community days of reflection, quiet days at the beginning of Advent and Lent. Twice a year there is an obligatory formation day to which we invite experienced facilitators. Moreover, we train the brothers and priests to provide a safe environment and raise awareness in order to avoid any kind of abuse.

We regularly meet in organized social-language groups in which we are free to mix and practice the languages we are learning. A tailored program for priestly and pastoral formation trains those who prepare for ordination. They learn how to connect their monastic vocation with the call to the diaconate or priesthood.

On a regular basis, Sant’Anselmo hosts representatives of other Christian churches and denominations that help to widen the ecumenic perspective of the residents. At times, we have even hosted monks of other religions.
